You are scheduled to begin a new online class and this is a time that can be exciting and challenging. Getting ready for a new class involves developing a plan to manage your responsibilities so you are ready to meet the expectations that are required of an online student.

Online Student Checklist

Computer Basics: Check the technical requirements provided by your school and make certain your computer is fully updated and equipped. If you are utilizing an alternate source for Internet access such as a public library, check the hours of availability each week.

Online Classroom: Take time to review any tutorials that are provided and navigate through the classroom to explore its functions and features. If there is anything you are uncertain about be sure to check with your instructor.

Who to Contact: Put your instructor's contact information in a place that is easily accessible, along with contact information for the school's administration office.

Time Management: An online class requires an investment of time to meet all of the required expectations and complete the required learning activities. The first consideration for a student is development of a time management plan. One of the most effective means of preparing for the class each week is to create a schedule of all responsibilities – including studying and assignments. Be sure to download and save a copy of the course syllabus as it will serve as a guide for your courses.

Stress Management: Are you aware of any potential to experience stress? Are you able to recognize any signs of stress? Do you have a plan for dealing with any potential stress? By asking these questions you can monitor your progress in class and be prepared to use stress management tools any time you experience signs or symptoms of stress.

Ground Rules: Has your instructor established ground rules and expectations? Instructors will often establish expectations about communication and plagiarism at the start of the class, which reinforces school policies. One of the most commonly used ground rules for working with sources that you are going to use for your papers, if required, is called APA formatting.

Course Materials: Have you had an opportunity to review the assigned readings? Make time at the start of the week to review the assigned readings so that you are prepared to work on your assignments.

Assignments: Are you familiar with the class assignments? The most effective strategy is to look ahead, plan ahead, and ask questions prior to submitting your assignments. If you are struggling with the development of your academic writing skills, be sure to contact your instructor for assistance.

Feedback: Your instructor will provide feedback for each of your written assignments. You should always take time to review the feedback provided and if you have any questions or would like to discuss it further, be sure to contact your instructor.

Communication: Most of your communication will be with your instructor as you work on the required learning activities. Be sure to always remain respectful and consider the tone of your messages.

Resources: Do you have a list of resources available that can help you address your academic developmental needs and challenges? You can include your instructors as one of your resources as they are always interested in helping you succeed.
